Knockatallon Community Development Launch Hooley In The Heather Summer Festival

Knockatallon Community Development launch Hooley in the Heather summer festival with two of the country’s most popular music acts and a host of other fun events planned for all ages.

Knockatallon Community Development on Saturday April 13th launched Hooley in the Heather, a weeklong summer festival to be held in the beautiful Sliabh Beagh area of County Monaghan and which opens with country music sensation Derek Ryan on Friday June 7th. The festival features music events, sports events, and other activities that promise something fun for all ages.

After Derek Ryan’s opening night with support from local ballad and folk group Na Saoirsí, a family walk/run/cycle day in aid of Multiple Sclerosis Monaghan will take place on Saturday June 8th. Geared towards the whole family, each route takes in a different part of the picturesque Sliabh Beagh scenery and welcomes all levels of fitness and ability. On Sunday, a car boot sale in the Sliabh Beagh Hotel car park will close off the opening festival weekend.

Following the successful turnout at last year’s unveiling of the restored grotto on Mulligan’s Hill, a mass will be held there once again this year and incorporated into the festival on Thursday June 13th.

On Friday June 14th, The High Kings will headline Hooley in the Heather with support from local ballad legends Shanachie. The High Kings were previously named Best Folk Act at Ireland’s Music Awards, with all four members of the group coming from accomplished musical pedigrees.

On Saturday June 15th a schools reunion will take place as part of The Gathering 2013. Past pupils of all ages from three local schools – Barrititoppy, Killycarnan, and Knockatallon National School – are invited from home and abroad to a night of celebration, with music and finger food provided.

The last day of Hooley in the Heather, Sunday June 16th is the development committee’s annual Bonfire Sports Day that includes school sports and competitions, inflatables, and a playhouse for toddlers.
