Revenue Commissioners have announced there has been a huge escalation in fuel laundering over the last year.
County Monaghan is one such area which experienced a high detection rate of these plants.
Customs officers detected and closed nine oil laundry operations in 2011 – along with shutting 32 filling stations who did not have licences or for breaching their licence conditions.
In total – Revenue seized over one million litres of illicit fuel over the last 12 months.
However Gerard Moran of the Revenue Commissioners – who appeared before an Oireachtas Committee today – says “it is not possible to measure the scale of the problem”
